I felt like like I needed a new kinetic typography piece for my portfolio, so I brainstormed some phrases with Chat GPT. This one felt like it would work well for the style I wanted to create. I wanted something clean and bold that would reveal a more gritty hand drawn style.
I began with a simple story board to come up with the transitions between the text. I knew that I wanted hands to lead some of the transitions. First I thought I would create a vector version but opted for a "newspaper cut out version that I took of my own hand and edited in photoshop.
My original Idea for the transition of "thinking" to "made" didn't end up fitting the pace of the animation so I ended up shifting it from a springy match cut to two separate transitions.
I wanted the final transition to have a rough jagged impact. It felt like the best option was to cell animate the lighting bolt. I animated it at 12fps which added to the handmade feel and impact of the last transition. To expand on this style I made some rough grain textures in Procreate which I composed in After Effects into a looping textured background for the last scene. Finally I added a slight turbulent displace effect to the text on the final scene which helped it sit with the other elements.
